You’ve undoubtedly heard about the new virus worrying public health officials around the globe—2019-Novel Coronavirus (CoV). It’s a new strain originating in Wuhan, China but quickly popping up around the world with our global travel. Viruses are constantly mutating, which means that we don’t have antibodies to protect us from this new virus. While most people will fully recover from an infection with this virus, the young, the old, and those with other illnesses, especially chronic respiratory and cardiac conditions, are at higher risk of complications from pneumonia and even death. So, it’s important to do what you can to stay healthy and avoid getting sick.
What Can You Do?
Try to avoid folks who are sick. Wash your hands frequently with warm, soapy water, especially after being in public places, and keep hand sanitizer on hand. Viruses are spread by aerosolized droplets from coughs and sneezes. Use a disinfectant like Basic-G® Germicide to disinfect hard surfaces like doorknobs and countertops, keeping in mind not to use it on your skin. Basic-G is effective as a surface disinfectant against a whole host of bacteria and viruses, including human coronaviruses, although it has not been tested on this new strain.
