The Environmental Working Group
The Environmental Working Group is an organization whose work is fundamental to consumer safety and critical to creating a healthier world. As a symbol of cleaner choices, future-forward consciousness, and safeguarding the health of future generations, EWG educates individuals about potential environmental hazards and their effects on human health. Through their research, advocacy, and legal efforts, they strive to create a healthier world for everyone by providing valuable resources and information to empower individuals to make informed choices about their health and well-being.
The EWG VERIFIED Mark
The EWG VERIFIED program makes it easier for everyone everywhere to find safer and healthier consumer products. Products with the EWG VERIFIED mark have been extensively reviewed by a team of unbiased scientists and toxicologists to ensure they fully disclose their ingredients, are free from EWG’s list of toxic ingredients of concern, and meet the most rigorous health and safety standards. EWG VERIFIED is the only third-party certification or evaluation program that publicly discloses its full criteria, has scientists on staff, and requires full transparency of ingredients—including fragrance.
The Importance of Ingredients
Nearly 30% of personal care products on the market today contain ingredients linked to cancer and developmental and reproductive issues. Also, 40% of personal care products as well as 55% of cleaning products on the market today contain potentially toxic fragrance ingredients that are not disclosed. Each day, American women use an average of 14 personal care products, and American men use an average of 12 personal care products. With 85% of adults concerned about the safety of ingredients in their personal care and cleaning products, the EWG VERIFIED mark does the work for consumers and helps eliminate confusion.
Any product that has the EWG VERIFIED mark is free from EWG’s list of toxic chemicals of concern. Cosmetics sold in the United States can contain any of the 33 ingredients banned in Canadian cosmetics, 85 ingredients banned in European cosmetics, 25 ingredients not allowed in European hair dyes, 27 ingredients known to the state of California to cause cancer, and 8 ingredients known to the state of California to be developmental toxins. But EWG verified products contain NONE of these ingredients.
The scientific standards underlying the EWG VERIFIED program are backed by decades of research and expertise in toxic chemicals and human and environmental health. These strict standards are also dynamic, so they’re updated annually to reflect the latest scientific evidence available.
