What You Need To Know About Reb M, a New Healthy Sweetener

What is Reb M and does it come from stevia?
Reb M, or Rebaudioside M, is a new zero-calorie sweetener derived from the fermentation of sugar cane. There is also Reb M that is derived from stevia but that is not the one we use. Ours has a natural sweetness without the aftertaste that a lot of people get from stevia, especially when the Reb M is combined with a small amount of sugar. This combination allows us to offer protein-rich shakes that taste good and are creamy yet very low in sugar.
First, why did we reformulate our Life Shakes?
We listened to our customers! We heard from quite a few customers who just weren’t happy with the stevia aftertaste in our zero-sugar version of Life Shake. So, we went back to the drawing board. We did a lot of tastings, internally as well as with many of our customers, and we ultimately landed on a new formula using a new zero-calorie sweetener called Reb M, a very small amount of sugar, a different fiber, and some new natural flavors.
Why did we add a small amount of sugar?
We added just 5 grams of sugar, which is only 20 calories and equivalent to about 1/4 of a medium apple. This small amount allowed us to create a delicious product with a clean sweetness and no aftertaste. We did a lot of taste testing, and this combination of Reb M and sugar was overwhelmingly preferred among our tasters. And with just 5 grams of sugar, our new Life Shakes are still considered low glycemic and therefore are great for everyone, including people watching their sugar intake and people who are carb and sugar sensitive. These folks can enjoy Life Shake without worrying about blood sugar spikes. Also, our new soy and plant-based Life Shakes are nutrient-dense; they have 20 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, and 24 essential vitamins and minerals.
